Hair Tips

Hey all! A few people have requested this, so here are a few tips and tricks on how to care for your hair. I will touch on the different types of products which I have tried, and the different ways to take care of your tresses.

1. Wet Hair is Vulnerable Hair
I always tell anyone who asks, never to violently brush out tangles when hair is wet. Hair is at its most fragile and vulnerable in this state, and will be more prone to breaking off, especially when being pulled down with such great force. What I handle long hair, I detangle the ends first using a wide-tooth comb, after which I will work my way up the hair shaft.

A wide tooth comb is available at any hair product stores or even your local drugstores, and it looks something like this.

Also, to facilitate detangling, use conditioner on a regular basis. Once hair breakage occurs, this can lead to the lower hair shaft getting thinner and more frayed.

2. Condition, condition, condition!
Conditoners are not only used for detangling the hair, but it also helps boost shine whilst making hair much softer and manageable. Shampoos are used to clean the hair shaft, getting rid of all the oil and dirt, and it also causes the scales on the hair follicle to open up. Conditioners are then used to smooth down the scales on the hair follicles, hence giving the hair follicle a smoother finish hence enhanced shine and manageability. There are many types and brands of conditioners out there in the market, for different types of hair. Here are some of the brands that I've tried.

L'Oreal Professionnel Serie Expert Masque Liss Extreme

This conditioner is excellent for unmanageable hair. Recommended by many stylists as the "rebonding conditioner", it smooths down the hair cuticle and keeps the hair tame and soft, while amplifying the hair shaft's shine.

TIGI Catwalk Curls Rock Conditioner

This conditioner helps define your hair's natural curls, whilst making it really soft and fluffy. Used with a good sculpting lotion, it will turn curls from a frizz ball to neat shapely ringlets.

TIGI Bedhead Moisture Maniac Conditioner

This conditioner is great for dry hair. It greatly softens the hair shaft, giving it supreme softness and a light natural shine. Also, this conditioner doesn't weigh down the hair shaft, so your hair will feel lightweight.

3. Protect your Hair
Before blow-drying or styling, it is important to protect your hair with a top-coat. Especially for those who do not condition, this step is neccessary so as to protect your hair from heat damage. A lightweight protective serum or a heat protective spray would be ideal. Here are some of the ones I have tried.

TIGI Catwalk Spritz & Shine Heat Safe Styler

This product is effective before blow-drying or flat-ironing. It amplifies the shine of the hair and has a sweet smell of pomegranate. However, the product has to be used in minimal amounts and has to be distributed evenly, otherwise stickiness and stiffness might occur. My recommendation is to apply to damp hair and blow-dry before using a flat-iron.

L'Oreal TecniArt Hot Style Constructor

This product is very lightweight. Operating on H.O.T (Heat Optimizing Technology), this product disappears once it touches your hair, giving a natural and lightweight feel.

Lucido-l Hair Pre-Curl Water

This product comes in the form of a transparent liquid, almost water like. This product is very lightweight, and disappears once brushed through a few times. Great for curling hair with, it doesn't weigh down curls. Can be used before blow-drying and flat-ironing for heat protective functions.
